The 6v coil will work but you need to add a 12v to 6v resistor in the wire to the coil. Since you are changing over to 12v for better cranking and a more reliable spark at the plugs I think it is best to replace your old coil with a new 12v coil. This is also something to think about if getting a kit. Most kits come with a 12v to 6v resistor.

May 15, 2011 · Surprizingly enuff, the original 3-terminal 6-volt solenoid is plenty strong to use on 12-volts. I strongly recommed using the 3-terminal 6-volt solenoid on yer 12-volt conversion. Remember, the 1-wire 12-volt alternator needs to be jazzed to about 1800rpms before the internal voltage regulator kicks in. Once in, it will charge at 500rpms. Forget the words 100 ohm resistor. there aren't any of those on any ford tractor ignition systems. If you are on a 6v system on an 850, then use a 6v coil. if on a 12v system on an 850, use a 12v coil. napa ic145sb. no resistors. the 6v oem solenoid on an 850 works fine with 12v.
