My 21 Tacoma rear diff went out at 8k so I decided to change my 4Runner as a precaution. My question is should I wait until 50k to change the transfer case and front diff since I hardly put it in 4 wheel ...
For my front diff the fill plug requires a Allen wrench or socket. ALWAYS take the fill plug off before the drain plug otherwise if that fill plug gets stuck you have no way of adding fluid. Also it'd be wise to do the rear diff at the same time. I did my t-case and trans too.For the transfer case you definitely want to use a GL-4 rated fluid such as the 75W Redline MT-LV fluid mentioned above. A GL-5 rated fluid is harsh on the brass synchros. As for the differentials, any quality 75W-90 will do. FWIW, I'm a second owner and sitting at just over 50k miles on original fluids.I do not feel like dealing with it but the dealer wants $60 per diff and $60 for the transfer case. $180 is ridiculously steep.
